Importing / exporting favorites and cookies with Internet Explorer's wizard

09/27/01

the import export wizard This one was sent to me by Chris Caligari. He had purchased a new computer and was trying to move his Cookies from his old computer to his new computer.

Why would anyone want to take their cookies with them? Aren't cookies bad?

Cookies aren't bad (yeah right). Sometimes they do store your personal settings for web sites, and maybe you don't want to have to go customize your "experience" at some of the sites you visit.

Chris found the Import/Export favorites/cookies wizard in Internet Explorer 5 (and 6 I think). This little wizard it's quick and simple and works well (and it's from MS, go figure - maybe they subcontracted this part out and "QC" missed it).

Using the wizard is really self explanatory, but a lot of people don't even know it's there (I didn't).

Getting started

Anyway, this is how it works:

choose import and export... from file menu

  1. In Internet Explorer, go to File | Import and Export... This will start the Wizard. Hit Next.

  2. choose an action to perform
  3. Choose what you want to import or export.

*Note: You may want to import/export favorites ("bookmarks" in Netscape) instead of simply copy/pasting them because I think using import/export preserves the order in which they appear in the menu (you do know you can rearrange the order of your favorites right?).

  4. If you're exporting, select a file name or another browser to export to.
If you're importing, browse to the file you selected (or another browser).

That's it!

More in-depth explanation (for those that want it):

The cookies are simple text files stored in a folder (usually C:\Windows\Cookies or similar). To move them from one computer simply copying them from one computer's Cookies folder to another doesn't work. Internet Explorer stores some additional information in the index.dat file contained in the Cookies folder. That file is locked by the OS since IE is "part of the OS" right?

A side note for those that are wondering. The translucent menu above was done in Photoshop, but you can have translucent menus in windows by using WindowsFX from Stardock.
