Creating your own icons for links in your "favorites" (Internet Explorer 4 & 5)

update 12/31/00: added win2000 folder location and minor corrections.

update 10/04/99: Although Microsoft tried to implement a similar function in Internet explorer 5 called favicons, where a web-site's default icon would be used whenever you add that site to your favorites. It doesn't really work for me, so I just create my own icons and use them like I show here:

fav05.gif (11480 bytes)This is an easy one:

1. Prepare an icon or bitmap (.BMP) file (image) you wish to use as your icon. Save it and remember it's location (ie c:\Windows\Favorites\bldrlogo.BMP)
(see below for help on creating your own icon files)

the bitmap that will be our icon

2. Open Internet Explorer

3. Depending on your browser and operating system, you can go about this step in different ways:

You can select the favorite directly from the favorites menu.

You can open the favorites menu and select Organize favorites and select them from there.

You can also go to:
Windows 2000: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Favorites
Windows 9x: C:\Windows\Favorites
Windows NT4: C:\WinNT\Profiles\username\Favorites.

Once you select the link you want to change the icon for, right-click on it and select Properties (you can also left-click (select it) and press Alt-Enter).

4. Click on the Internet Shortcut tab and click on the change icon button.

fav04.gif (8949 bytes)

5. Enter the path for the icon you wish to use and click OK.

That's all there is to it! The icon you selected should appear in your browser when you pull down the favorites menu.

You don't have to use bitmap images as icons. You can create your own icon files, or use or modify existing icons.
There are many great icon editing programs available, two of the best are:
AxIcons (Axialis software):
I've used AxIcons myself and I like it.

and

MicroAngelo (Impact software):
Has won several awards and is definitely a great program for icon editing.
