There it is. This morning Tweak Central received its 200,000th visitor.
Too bad they didn't receive a prize.
I have been busy with other parts of my life... Hopefully I'll get back
to updating the site one of these days.
Thank you to all of you who have written to me with suggestions and links
to share with others.

Update Email hidden source: me
07/06 - 16:34
I have finally hidden my email address on EVERY PAGE of this site. I
receive about 3 - 5 KLez
virus (worm) emails every day and I'm just about sick of it.
ps - don't open attachments, especially if the sender uses crap-ass english
like, "this is a very excite game. You be the first to play it"
- get lost!
I used a pretty common javascript trick (like
this one) that just hides the email address unless you have javascript
enabled (which I don't, go figure) but it still shows you...
anyway...
I haven't had time to add much to the site this past year: not like there's
much going on in the computer industry anyway. The site is approaching
200,000 hits - that's kinda cool.
If you have any questions or comments, as usual,
!
Sorry SPAM-bots!
This article
on OS Opinion points out some new security exploits in Microsoft's browser(s):
Microsoft has just released a patch
for several flaws in its Internet Explorer browser versions 5.01, 5.5
and 6.0. The flaws include security holes that could disclose authentication
and other information to an attacker or that could allow an attacker
to take over a user's computer.
This is getting to be pretty old hat for Microsoft users.
ps - My apologies for the lack of regular updates - As usual, I've been
busy with work and other projects. Right now I'm working on an complete
E-Commerce web site. We'll see how it turns out. There a lot of things
I've been wanting to do with this site, but I haven't had time. Someday...
Remove ads from LimeWire basic source: my dome
02/27 - 02:23
update: 03/01
update 03/01: The remedy below doesn't seem
to be enough. There are also a few ads (gif images) stashed in C:\Windows\System32\AdCache\
or C:\WINNT\System32\AdCache\. Replace those
files and you should be ad free. I also updated the
replacement image to be blank instead of white: if it doesn't work,
let me know. We'll see...
Assuming
you avoided all the trojan-ware that comes with LimeWire,
there are still ads and it's still spyware, but what can you do?
Anyway, you can get rid of the ads!
This works on 2.1.3, the version I'm running.
This is so simple, it cracks me up:
1. Go to the following directory
C:\Program Files\LimeWire\2.1.3\lib\ads
*Note: I created a copy of the folder incase I bullocksed everything up
2. download my blank ad gif image (right-click
and select Save Target As...)or just
open one of the images and replace it with whatever you want
3. replace all the files in that directory with your blank image.
4. Voila! Enjoy pirating music and pr0n without the annoying ads or paying
the insane $8.50 US the crooks are trying to scam from you for software
that should be free. How dare they!
btw - Limewire installs this Cydoor BS in your Registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cydoor
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cydoor Services
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cydoor
If you remove or rename them, it simply adds them again. In theory, you
could write a script or reg file that removes these, but you're bailing
water out of a sinking ship...
Check out this site I found: Ghost
sites. Steve Baldwin (I don't think it's the
actor) has screen captures of a few hundred web sites that have gone
out of business or are just no longer around. From Ghost sites:
This exhibit - The Museum of E-Failure - is an
attempt to actively preserve the home pages of sites that will probably
disappear in the next few months. Our goal is not to laugh at the fallen,
but to preserve their last image, before all traces of these sites'
existence are deleted from history's view. It is my hope that these
screenshots may serve as a reminder of the glory, folly, and historically
unique design sensibilities of the Web's Great Gilded Age
Our collection now is at 1,048 screens from approximately 700 defunct
Web projects that tanked between 1998 and 2002
I stumbled on this site while I was looking for an explanation as to
what happened to Tweakfiles (below).
Minor updates source: TweakCentral
02/07 - 12:35
Some kind visitors pointed out to me that some of my links were out
of date, so I updated them: namely Tweakfiles.com
- they're gone. Try Download.com
(CNet) or FilePlanet.
And for the wierdest reason, Annoyances.org,
one of the first and best sites around was NOT on my links page. It is
now
btw - I think this site is in DIRE need of an overhaul, but you know how
that goes...
