Another update
source: TweakCentral
|
|

As a little update, a kind visitor, Steve Fuller pointed out to me that
the cause of Outlook Express hanging on loading was that I had disabled
the "Protected Storage" service. Thank you!
I also got my Creative Sound Blaster
Live! Value finally working. It only took me about 3 days. I finally found
some old "LiveWare 3" install files I had backed up and they
did the trick. I had it working before, but it wouldn't keep the 4 speaker
setting, so I had tried to reinstall it - big mistake. Hopefully I'm smart
enough to leave well enough alone this time.
btw - If you're interested in OpenGL
programming (and why wouldn't you be?), this person has come up with a
GL based windowing system (API) which he calls CPW.
This is EXACTLY what I need if I ever get 'back on my horse' and continue
that game I was working
on... anyway...

Minor update

I hope all of you are having a great new year! I've just been too busy
to update the site as much as I'd like to. Besides, there's not much computer
news going on out there anyway .
DaveV's Windows
Services Configuration 411
I found this great page dealing with Services that run in Windows 2000/NT
4 (and xp?). It tells you what each does and whether or not it's necessary
to keep it running. I had a problem with SERVICES.EXE pegging 99% of my
cpu for about 5 minutes at a time, but it seems to have gone away.
update 01/23/02 - fixed see above
Another thing: My Outlook Express 5.5 hangs for about 2 minutes when I
launch it now. It started when I used this program called Outlook Express
Backup to restore my previous settings. If you know how to fix it, I'd
be very appreciative if you could tell me. I've tried a number of things
but am still unable to fix it - I think it has something to do with the
identities...
All these lame-o problems: I must be losing my touch...
btw - in non-news, I've got my cartman machine up to 1533MHz (1333 tbird
@10.5 x 146/292Mhz fsb) and my Stan machine at 1000 (700 tbird @10.0 x
100Mhz fsb) - fun stuff. Want to know more about my "hardware?"
check out my hardware page.
